Relatives Galore

yammadi!! enna koottam da saami!! (What a crowd!)

Hari has seen more relatives over the past three months than in his entire five years of life :-)

Am I happy? yeeessss...

Am I irritated? maybe...

But on the whole its been wonderful. Let me begin at the beginning.

We arrive at Madras and mama with pranav come from bangalore. Stay with us for two days forcing me to cook 3, 4, 5... no no 6 times a day. Of course there has been my brother's family - sanjay, aarthi with chechal and sush - the visits to their place are more. One mama from pallavaram with his wife is frequent visitor, "I was just passing by and thought would pop in to say hello". Then my parents arrived from the US. Had three of my mom's sisters visit me. Bala's chitti, mami, cousin, his fiancee... etc. etc. So the number now stands at somewhere between 35 and 50.

I lost count after 12 :-) Come navarathri there is an increase in mutual visits. Dipavali saw Shyam's family coming down from the US.

Result is - Hari is trying to figure out how he is related to everybody and how he can be related to future issues. He eagerly wanted to know when Sriram (Bala's cousin who got married on Nov 10) will get a child. I tried to tell him subtly, "Hari lets play something" or shout "Hari?". But then I realised that he just wanted to know if his dad will be peripa to that kid. Okay son! lets just deal with existing people. Don't embarrass me again!!

Hari participated in two competitions today and won 1st in Tamil and 2nd in Sanskrit recitation. Okay, I just can't stop peethifying about this to all and sundry - pandal pottu, serial set vechu, mikela thaan innum sollavillai :-) Now to the topic. Competitions are one more thing that I have missed during my stay away from Madras. Till I left college, every recitation and oratorical competition conducted in the city in sanskrit had me participating and almost always bagging a prize too. On one hand, I was relieved to know that I don't need to go thro' the tension of standing before a frowning judge. On the other hand, I feel the same tension because it was my son who had to stand before the judge. When I was standing outside I got a chance to observe the OE parents walking up and down the school premises, giving pep talks to their kids, last minute revisions and ofcourse the thayirsaadam dubbas :-) The parents seemed more worried than the kids. Milk Can Mania Placing a milk can in the refrigerator is quite tricky to master. Align the sides of the can with the sides of the refrigerator in such a way that the handle is to your right. Reason Getting the can out is easy when the handle is facing you. More cans fit in one shelf this way. Caution 1. Make sure you don't buy all groceries at the same time, else you will have a tough time stocking the refrigerator properly. 2. This is the most important part. Read carefully. Never push the milk can inside when your wife is supervising the procedure.

Career problems for a 6 yr old

Not one morning passes by without Hari's polambals. He has to say atleast 23 times "I don't want to go school". These would be followed by lectures on 1. Its good for you 2. You don't want to be illiterate. Do you? 3. Don't you want to be a tech director like appa? 4. You have to do some work or the other to survive. etc.. etc.. My next strategy was - "you have to look after cows." I was stunned when he said ok. Thats where Bala came in and dropped the right sentence "looking after cows means cleaning cowdung too!!" "oops" That was something my 6 year old could not imagine. The bum-cleaning is mommy's job. How can he do that? Okay, Mom, lets make a deal. I will take care of the cows, but the cleaning part, why don't you do it as always? When that did not get any response from me, hari decided he will work at home like his mom.
